Great Expectations

Power

Status and Money - The lady in the big house doesn't need to do anything to be powerful.

Occupation - Despite Joe the smithy's great personal strength, his role is not considered to be powerful.

Beauty - Pip is overwhelmed by Estella's beauty.  She knows straightaway that she has sexual power over Pip.

Family - The power Pip's family have over him is weak.  He has lost his parents, and his sister and uncle       do not love him.

Class - Magwitch knew that his sentence was going to be far more severe than his adversary, who raped his          wife, but as a 'gentleman' was released with just a caution.

Trust - Miss Haversham knew that her power, though substation, left her vulnerable.  She hated this.

Chance - A simple kick from a horse released Estella from her abusive husband.

Freedom - Herbert Pocket and his wife marry for love, and chose to live as they wish, despite Herbert               loosing his family's favour.

Compromise - Jaggers was aware of how he could use his power, understanding its limits, and using it without complete integrity.
