Anita and Giuseppe
What links Day 13 of the Giro D'Italia with San Marino with The Republic of Riograndense with The Azores, with Tyneside, with San Marino, with so much else? The dynamic duo- Anita and Giuseppe Garibaldi.
They met in Brazil, where Giuseppe had traveled to join the Army of the Riogranense Republic to fight for independance from Brazil. This was a republic the size of Uruguay. Anita was a skilled horsewoman, and lead armies into battle. This current cause was lost.
Giuseppe was born in Nice, which had recently become French. He initally fought against the French, but later in his life joined the French army to fight the Prussins with an International brigade, not disimlar to the famed brigade of the Spanish civil war.
Anita died near Ravenna of maleria, after the couple had taken refuge in San Marino. Many of Giuseppes causes were lost, but he is remembered for fighting to help creat the first united Italy.
He also visited Britain where he stayed in Huntington Place, Tynemouth, for a few days.
What an amazing life.
