Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken. Ecclesiastes 4:12
Oft quoted in weddings, the illusion to three is curious. As believers we see that the marriage relationship has a third partner. It is the Creator. In Genesis, it appears that the Creator's design is for the person to relate solely to them. But they are lonely, so a partnership is created. However the original plan is designed to continue. Two become three. The image here is of a strong cord. Another image is of an equilateral triangle, where the closer I get to the Creator, the closer I also get to my partner, and visa versa. It's a win-win.
Partnership is covering each other's back. It is the 'two' becoming one'. As Esther Rantzen said of the loss of her husband, "I have many wonderful friends who I can do so many wonderful things with. I have lost the person who I can do nothing with."
