Tenth Day of Lent - Critical

Woman in Red Armchair
by P Picasso (1932) Tate Modern, London

“We are not stoning you for any good work,” they replied, “but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God.”  John 10:33

This is surly the biggest criticism of Jesus and his followers.  If Jesus is just human, don't worship him.  Famously the accusation is that Jesus was deluded (or insane), a charlatan, or genuine.  There is a fourth, which can be found in the Koran, which is that the story has been distorted, and it's Jesus' followers who are deluded or manipulative.

The crux of the matter is whether Jesus is divine or not.  I remember talking with my father about this.  Jesus was not explicit.  Others were, including his enemies as referenced above.  My father said that Jesus invites people to discover his divinity, and does not impose it.  The discovery is received through revelation.

Who do you say I am?  asks Jesus in Matthew's account (chapter 16).

Simon Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God."

Jesus replied, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven."

PRAYER:  Reveal yourself to me Jesus.
