Archangel Michael defeats the devil. Ignacio de Ries, The Met, New York |
“Daniel, keep this prophecy sealed up until the time has passed, so that many will have their knowledge increased.”
And then I saw two others standing on the opposite bank of the river. “How long will it be until these shocking events are over?” one called out.
“It will go on for a time, a time, and half a time,” was the answer.
I was not clear what this meant so asked, “how will this all finally end?”
No reply, but instead an exhortation:-
“keep this knowledge quiet. Many will be purified and cleaned by these trials. The wicked will not understand. From the time that daily sacrifice is ended, and the desecration is erected will be 1290 days. Blessed are those who wait 1335 days!”
This passage from Daniel fore tells this conversation Jesus has with his followers. There was trouble ahead. Why is this life so wearisome? Full of striving and sadness? It is but for a time, and these trial have a meaning. Nothing is without meaning. Can we wait 1335 days?
