Advent Nineteen - Communion

Supper at Emmaus, by Caravaggio
National Gallery, London

As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus continued on as if he were going farther.  But they urged him strongly, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over.” So he went in to stay with them.

When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight. They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?” Luke 24: 28-32

Everytime orthodox Jews gather to eat, they celebrate 'communion'.  They remember, just as they have always been asked to remember. Muslims also have a number of customs and traditions that help them to be grounded in the greatness of God.

we meet together we also remember.  It is part of being a community.  We remember absent friends.  We remember how fortunate we are.  Let us remember how necessary the coming of Christ into this world is for us.  We celebrate with a 'present' friend.  This is the greatest blessing.

PRAYER:  We honour and worship you this advent as the one who as come to 'dwell amongst us."
